The City of West Frankfort was notified this week that Starbucks will be permanently closing its location near Interstate 57, just over one year after opening. The company cited a nationwide restructuring plan that will result in the closure of approximately 1% of its U.S. stores.

Mayor Tim Arview released the following statement regarding the announcement:

“While we are disappointed to learn of Starbucks’ decision to close its West Frankfort location, we recognize that this is part of a larger corporate strategy affecting communities across the country — not a reflection of our city or our residents. The store quickly became a familiar stop for commuters and travelers, and we are grateful to the employees who served our community during its time here.”

Mayor Arview emphasized that the closure does not signal a slowdown in local growth and that the city remains committed to attracting new businesses to the high-traffic area along the interstate.

“This property remains one of the most visible and strategically located commercial sites in southern Illinois,” Arview continued. “We are already in conversations with our economic development partners and property owners to explore new opportunities for the site. Our goal is to ensure that this location continues to serve as a gateway to West Frankfort — bringing in jobs, investment, and amenities for our residents and visitors.”

The City of West Frankfort has seen continued interest in commercial development near I-57, as well as ongoing revitalization efforts downtown and in other key areas. City leaders say they will work proactively with potential investors to find a new business that complements the surrounding retail corridor and contributes to the city’s long-term growth.
